Thompson National Aboriginal Day Events (Thompson)
This all-day event begins with a sunrise ceremony at 5:30 am. A tipi, tents and platform are set up at the celebration site, which moved temporarily last year from MacLean Park at Thompson's City Hall to Centennial Park (due to construction). This year the event will move back to MacLean Park should construction be complete in time.
The morning includes kids events, games & crafts (traditional & modern).
At noon, in the spirit of feasting - a community BBQ is held. The afternoon begins with the Grand Entry, greetings and launch of the Thompson Aboriginal Accord progress report, then comes entertainment, talent show, traditional adult games and contests (jigging, log sawing, goose calling, moose calling, trap setting, etc.). Food booths are incorporated into the day, sample a Bannock Burgers or Indian Taco. The up-and-coming Aboriginal Art Centre for Northern MB has become a welcome partner that is present during the day, visitors will find a variety of local artists with their work on display and for sale.
The evening includes more entertainment, the Soaring Eagle Awards (recognizing outstanding Aboriginal people in the categories of Youth, Adult and Elder), retiring of the flags and fireworks. All events are free to attend and open to all and every aspect of the day is themed around celebrating culture.
